and a High School Diploma
College costs as we all know.
In Virginia, and in Albemarle County Public Schools we have a program called Early College Scholars. This program takes talented students who show maturity and an ability to work hard and puts them in Dual Enrollment classes with Piedmont Virginia Community College. Students in Early College Scholars graduate from ACPS with both their high school diploma and an Associates Degree, meaning that they have only two more years of college to complete after graduation.

This program is housed at Monticello High School (proximity to PVCC), but students from all the ACPS high schools can participate in it.

Some things to keep in mind:
- PVCC classes tend to transfer only to in state schools (JMU, UVA, Tech, etc.) so interested students should plan to stay in state
- ACPS does not provide all of the possible classes in house (some students will go to PVCC)
- Students may not be able to complete the whole Associates Degree just by using Dual Enrollment classes
- Students are not limited to Dual Enrollment classes (i.e. AP classes are fine too)
To qualify as an Early College Scholar students must:
- Have a 3.0 (unweighted) GPA or higher
- Be pursuing an Advanced Diploma
- Take and complete at least 15 credits of college level work (Dual Enrollment, AP, or IB classes)
- Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA in college level classes
- If taking AP, student must score 3 or better on the exam
This program is housed at Monticello High School (proximity to PVCC), but students from all the ACPS high schools can participate in it.
In Grade 10:
- SDV 100 – College Success Skils
- CSC 110 – Intro to Computing
- CST 100 – Public Speaking Skills
- Any other AP or DE classes you want (AP World, AP Econ, AP Psych, etc.)
In Grades 11 & 12:
- AP courses – AP US history, AP Econ, AP Art History, AP Gov, AP Lit, AP Chem, AP Bio, AP Physics, Calculus AB, etc.
- DE Courses – Anatomy and Physiology, Business Management, Sports Medicine, Medical Terminology, PVCC Econ, PVCC English, etc.
