"The Best School" and "The Best School for You" should be one and the same. You're not buying a pair of shoes. You're going to school for four years. Just because it's a good brand name, doesn't mean it fits you or that you're comfortable there.

Scholarships
Many students come to me to get help with scholarships. Often they have waited until after they finish their Common App and submitted it to colleges. This is actually not an awesome plan. Ideally students should be applying for scholarships as soon as they start applying for college and for some even before senior year. Luckily there are multiple sources for students to use to help themselves!
Ms. Poole, who is our scholarship coordinator, sends out emails with information about big ticket scholarships that are available Jefferson, Belk, Emily Couric, and Wells. But her emails also include local scholarships that you might be eligible for as well. The Elks, Widows’ Sons, and 100 Black Men of Virginia are just some of the smaller local scholarships we have access to. I also include these in the Round Up. This means of course, you have to read your email!
Schoolinks has an excellent scholarship matching tool. Enter your data into it, schools you are applying to, and interests and it will search for scholarships that might match you! Look for merit, need based, or interest based scholarships. How do you use it? Follow these screen shots!

How else can you find scholarships? I have a button on my website (in the Scholarships section) to JLV Counseling. I do not know Jessica (the J in JLV) but I love her for what she has done with this site! It is a free resource with lists and lists of scholarships organized around deadlines, interests, affinities, and more. How do I find the scholarships I include in the Round Up? Her site is one of my main go tos and should always be a first stop for families looking for scholarship information.
I’ve also created a database you can use that includes all of the colleges with full ride scholarships. Find that button under JLV Counseling.
Don’t wait folks! It’s a great idea to apply to scholarships frequently as you are also applying to college. With the cost of college around $40,000 in state and as much as $95,000 for a private college, finding funding is important. And don’t forget, you can always come to me!
