Stetson University

Steston University has it all. It’s a perfect size (about 3100 students) in a gorgeous place (about a ½ hour drive to Daytona Beach) with DI sports, Greek Life, and a campus so beautiful you’ll think you’re in a country club. Freshmen can have cars, and the dorms are pet friendly. Seriously, Stetson is A-Mazing!
Founded in 1883, Stetson prides itself on developing students to become business and social leaders, artists, innovators, people ready to take on the challenges of the 21st century. They do this through small class size, close student/faculty relationships, and collaborative work which encourages critical thinking, intellectual debate, imaginative inquiry and creative expression. Stetson is dedicated to the development of the whole person and to making sure their school is a place where learning and values meet.
There are a number of ways to study at Stetson. They offer a College of Arts & Sciences where you can study a classic liberal arts curriculum. They also have a College of Business where they offer a number of different programs, and finally a School of Music where you can major in a variety of fields as well.
Stetson has 76 different majors and a number of special programs you can take advantage of as well. The Bonner Program provides economic support for students interested in fostering social change and social justice. Bonner Scholars commit to 8+ hours of community service per week and work with local non-profits.
The Honors Program at Stetson is also available to top students. You’ll be exempted from most of the gen ed requirements and free to create your own personalized curriculum based on your interests and desires. You’ll be paired with a mentor who will help to guide you with this as well and will be expected to engage in work that is meaningful to you.
The Roland George Investments Program is open to students in the School of Business. This program allows students to actively manage a $3.5 Million portfolio. Open to seniors and limited to 20 people, this class is an amazing hands on opportunity to actually be a money manager before graduation.
Stetson is serious about learning through experience. You can leave there with a Certificate in Community Engagement if you’ve done 100 hours of community engagement work and also completed coursework related to the subject as well. Not sure what you want to do? Join the Discovery Program and explore what you want to do. Go to a workshop or head to a one on one coaching session. They can help you clarify your values and goals and help you find what you want to do.
First years live together in a living and learning community at Stetson. Through social and educational programming, a resident assistant, and other initiatives, first years make that transition to college together in a supportive atmosphere. After the first year there are other living options including themed housing like language housing, women’s leadership, arts, fraternity and sorority housing, and more. Students are required to live on campus until they have 90 credit hours.
Stetson sports are big and they are the Hatters. Catch men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, soccer for all, cross country, and of course, football. Women’s crew, lacrosse, and softball are all a part of sports life. Water polo and equestrian are club sports, so for those of you who want that you can have it.
Plus there are over 112 clubs at Stetson. Everything from the Hatwalk (fashion photography) to Cooking Club, Hacker Space to Mock Trial, Sport Business Association to Amnesty International, Caribbean Student Association to Ladies in STEM, Panhellenic Council to the Elite Stetson Steppers, there’s pretty much something for everyone.
Is Stetson for you? It’s a pretty traditional school: Greek life, sports, southern feel. But that tradition can feel pretty good. It’s a great place for those students who have some Bs on their transcripts and who want the feel of an Elon or a Wake or a Vandy without the size of one. Stetson is very approachable and it’s a place where you can really shine as a student. I like to think of it as a place where you can eat your cake and have it too (and yes, that’s the original way it was said!).
