Did you get deferred from your first choice school? It's frustrating of course. But have heart, there are things you can do. Consider writing a letter of continued interest. This is the letter that lets your school know that they are still your top choice, and updates them on what you have to offer, what you've been up to, and why that school is perfect for you. Some schools will not take these letters so check with your school before taking the time to do it.
If you get the sense that this is a brown nosy letter you are correct. While you shouldn't grovel in it you should definitely make it clear that you are very interested in being reconsidered.
Here is a sample of what a letter of continued interest should look like:
Dear Ms. Gonzalez,
Thank you so much for taking the time to review my application for acceptance at University of College. I know how time consuming it must be to read so many applications, but I want to assure you that UC is my top choice school and I am eager to continue my application with you.
Since I applied in November there are a few things that have happened that I’d like to update for you. I was awarded MVP for my high school curling team, who also won our regional conference. I am very much looking forward to the state meet coming up this month. My classes have gone well this semester and I have all As including in my five AP and Dual Enrollment classes. I completed a research paper in my AP Art History class about Alexander Calder’s kinetic sculptures and have submitted a proposal for my AP Studio Art class to create a mobile like his for school.
The University of College is a perfect fit for me because of your art programming, your curling team, and your open curriculum. I am very interested in furthering my studies in Art History but also in creating art as well. Professor X’s class on the History of Pop Art and his class on Artist as Maker will challenge me to look not just at art as artifact, but also at art as a product. I’m also very excited by your student curated exhibits in UC’s Art Museum of Art. I would be thrilled to be able to showcase my peers’ work while making a statement about the purpose of art in our world. I would be honored to do this kind of class work while playing on your curling team as well. Playing Lead for UC would be a dream come true for me because the Komodo Dragons are undefeated. I’m also eager to take advantage of your open curriculum which would allow me to explore areas of interest beyond art. I am very curious about geology and look forward to being able to study it with Professor Q. His work on Rocks for Everyone is very exciting. Few people appreciate stones the way curlers do.
I very much appreciate your being willing to look at my application a second time. I feel very lucky to be given the opportunity to update you on my work so far this year and am hoping to hear from you soon. Go Komodo Dragons!
Sincerely,
